ADHD is often misdiagnosed, and people suffer silently for years. What is ADHD?
ADHD is characterized by problems with executive skills, including inattention, disorganization, restlessness, and impulsivity, and is one of the most common childhood neurodevelopmental disorders. ADHD also affects more than ten million adults. Despite the growth in awareness of ADHD over the past couple of decades, many people with ADHD go undiagnosed.
But unlike depression or anxiety, ADHD is more complicated to diagnose in adolescents and adults. Diagnosing ADHD involves assessing behaviors, especially executive skills, which can fluctuate on a continuum. These behaviors interfere with living a happy and productive life.
Further complicating things, ADHD is also a risk factor for many other conditions, including anxiety and depression. Finding the correct diagnosis requires a well-trained clinician who will properly evaluate and ask the right questions. Psychological help includes executive skills training in time management and organizational skills, reducing impulsive behavior, and developing better problem-solving skills.
What is Traumatic Stress?
Traumatic stress is the psychological impact of a distressing event or situation that causes anxiety, depression, or other emotional and behavioral problems. Some examples of traumatic events are natural disasters, wars, accidents, assaults, or abuse. People who experience or witness traumatic events directly or indirectly (i.e., when the trauma occurs to a significant other) may have difficulty coping and adjusting and may develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This mental health condition involves intrusive memories, avoidance, negative mood, and changes in physical and emotional reactions.
Discussing such unexpected and overwhelming events with a professional knowledgeable about trauma can have a very positive effect on recovery. Counseling can help people with traumatic stress by providing a safe and supportive environment to process their emotions, thoughts, and behaviors related to the traumatic event. Counseling can also teach coping skills, such as relaxation techniques, mindfulness, or positive self-talk, to reduce anxiety, depression, and other symptoms. Additionally, counseling can help people with traumatic stress challenge and change negative beliefs about themselves, others, and the world that may have resulted from the trauma.
