Traumatic stress encompasses direct or indirect exposure to events or the witnessing of events that are extreme or life-threatening. Following a traumatic event, people frequently feel stunned, disoriented, or unable to integrate distressing information. Once these initial reactions subside, people can experience a variety of thoughts and behaviors. Common responses can be intense or unpredictable feelings, changes to thoughts and behavior patterns, sensitivity to environmental factors, strained interpersonal relationships, and stress-related physical symptoms.
Counseling can help survivors manage the impact of traumatic events. It allows people to process traumatic events and the lasting experience of trauma that may follow those events. Counseling can also help address the traumatic event and process the range of feelings and emotions. It can allow an individual to face fears in a safe space and learn coping skills to function and thrive on a day-to-day basis.
