Trauma & PTSD Treatment

Trauma Is Treatable — Recovery Is Possible

Trauma can result from a single overwhelming event or from prolonged exposure to distressing circumstances. When the effects of trauma persist — intrusive memories, avoidance, hypervigilance, emotional numbing — and interfere with daily life, this is Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) or a related trauma condition. These are not signs of weakness. They are the mind and body's natural response to experiences that exceeded their capacity to cope.

With the right treatment, recovery from PTSD and traumatic stress is achievable. Evidence-based therapies have strong track records of producing meaningful, lasting improvement — often in fewer sessions than people expect. The key is working with a clinician who has the training and experience to apply these approaches correctly.

Dr. Joseph S. Volpe, Ph.D., is a licensed clinical psychologist with over 30 years of experience providing trauma-focused psychotherapy to adolescents and adults on Long Island and throughout New York State. He uses structured, evidence-based approaches tailored to each person's history, symptoms, and goals.

Recognizing PTSD

How Traumatic Stress Shows Up in Daily Life

PTSD symptoms fall into four clusters. You do not need to experience all of them for trauma to be significantly affecting your life.

Re-experiencing

  • Intrusive memories or unwanted recollections of the event
  • Nightmares or distressing dreams related to the trauma
  • Flashbacks — feeling as if the event is happening again
  • Intense distress when reminded of the trauma

Avoidance

  • Avoiding thoughts, feelings, or memories related to the trauma
  • Avoiding people, places, activities, or situations that trigger reminders
  • Emotional numbing or feeling detached from others
  • Loss of interest in activities that were previously meaningful

Negative Cognitions & Mood

  • Persistent negative beliefs about yourself, others, or the world
  • Distorted blame of self or others for the traumatic event
  • Persistent feelings of fear, horror, anger, guilt, or shame
  • Difficulty experiencing positive emotions

Hyperarousal

  • Hypervigilance — feeling constantly on guard or alert for danger
  • Exaggerated startle response
  • Sleep disturbance — difficulty falling or staying asleep
  • Irritability, angry outbursts, or difficulty concentrating

Treatment

Evidence-Based Approaches to Trauma Treatment

Dr. Volpe uses structured, empirically supported treatments for PTSD and trauma-related conditions, tailored to each individual.

Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)

CPT is one of the most extensively researched and recommended treatments for PTSD. It focuses on identifying and modifying unhelpful beliefs that developed as a result of the trauma — about safety, trust, power, esteem, and intimacy — and reducing the emotional impact of traumatic memories.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Trauma-focused CBT addresses the thought patterns, avoidance behaviors, and emotional responses that maintain PTSD symptoms. It combines psychoeducation, cognitive restructuring, and gradual engagement with trauma-related material in a structured, supportive framework.

Individualized Treatment Planning

Effective trauma treatment is not one-size-fits-all. Dr. Volpe conducts a thorough evaluation before recommending an approach, and adapts the treatment to each person's history, symptom profile, co-occurring conditions, and goals.

Getting Started

What to Expect When You Begin Trauma Therapy

01

Initial Consultation

The process begins with a consultation call to discuss your concerns, answer your questions, and determine whether Dr. Volpe's practice is a good fit. There is no obligation to proceed.

02

Comprehensive Evaluation

The first one to two sessions involve a thorough clinical interview covering your history, current symptoms, prior treatment, and goals. Dr. Volpe may use standardized assessment instruments to clarify the diagnosis and inform the treatment plan.

03

Individualized Treatment Plan

Based on the evaluation, Dr. Volpe develops a treatment plan tailored to your specific presentation. He explains the rationale for the recommended approach and collaborates with you on goals and pacing.

04

Structured Trauma-Focused Therapy

Sessions are held weekly via secure telehealth. Trauma-focused treatment follows a structured protocol with clear phases — psychoeducation, skill-building, trauma processing, and consolidation — with regular progress reviews.

05

Progress and Completion

As symptoms improve and goals are met, sessions may become less frequent. Dr. Volpe works with you to consolidate gains, prepare for potential setbacks, and establish a plan for maintaining progress after treatment ends.
