A Parent's Guide to School & Home Accommodations for ADHD, LD, and Autism

The start of a new school year brings a familiar mix of hope and anxiety for parents of children with ADHD, learning disabilities (LD), or autism spectrum disorder (ASD). You want this year to be different — more support, less struggle, fewer calls home.
The good news: the right accommodations, in place before the year gains momentum, can make a measurable difference. This guide covers what works, both in the classroom and at home — including a deeper look at executive function, the cognitive skill set that underlies so many of the challenges these children face every day.
Understanding the Framework: IEPs and 504 Plans
Before diving into specific accommodations, it helps to understand the two main legal frameworks that govern school-based support in New York.
An Individualized Education Program (IEP) is developed under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). It provides specialized instruction and related services for students whose disability significantly impacts their ability to access the general curriculum. IEPs are developed by a team that includes parents, teachers, and specialists.
A 504 Plan falls under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. It provides accommodations — changes to how a student learns or demonstrates knowledge — without changing the curriculum itself. 504 plans are typically used when a student doesn't need specialized instruction but does need adjustments to access learning on equal footing.
If your child doesn't yet have either, a formal psychoeducational evaluation is the starting point. It documents the nature and severity of the disability and provides the clinical foundation for requesting services.
Executive Function: What It Is and Why It Matters
You may have heard the term "executive function" at an IEP meeting or in a psychologist's report. It's one of the most important — and most frequently misunderstood — concepts in understanding why children with ADHD, LD, and ASD struggle in school.
Executive functions are the mental management skills the brain uses to plan, organize, initiate, and regulate behavior. Think of them as the CEO of the brain — responsible for setting goals, managing time, filtering distractions, and keeping the big picture in view while handling the details.
The core executive function skills include:
- Working memory — holding information in mind while using it (e.g., remembering multi-step directions while completing step one)
- Cognitive flexibility — shifting attention between tasks, adapting to changes in rules or expectations, seeing problems from different angles
- Inhibitory control — stopping an impulse or automatic response in order to think before acting
- Planning and organization — breaking a goal into steps, sequencing those steps, and tracking progress
- Task initiation — getting started on a task without excessive procrastination or prompting
- Time management — estimating how long tasks take, managing deadlines, and transitioning between activities
- Emotional regulation — managing frustration, disappointment, and anxiety in ways that don't derail learning
- Self-monitoring — checking one's own work, recognizing errors, and adjusting behavior based on feedback
Executive Function and ADHD
ADHD is, at its core, a disorder of executive function. Children with ADHD typically have the intelligence to understand what is expected of them — the gap is in the ability to consistently execute. A child who knows the homework needs to be done but can't initiate it, loses track of time, forgets to turn it in, or melts down when it's harder than expected is showing executive function deficits, not laziness or defiance.
This distinction matters enormously for how parents and teachers respond. Punishing a child for not starting homework when task initiation is neurologically impaired is like penalizing a child with a broken leg for not running fast enough. The right response is a scaffold — an external support that compensates for the internal skill that isn't yet reliable.
Executive Function and Learning Disabilities
Children with dyslexia, dysgraphia, or dyscalculia often have co-occurring executive function challenges that compound the primary learning difficulty. A child with dyslexia who also struggles with working memory has to hold decoded words in mind while simultaneously constructing meaning — a double cognitive load that can make reading feel exhausting even when decoding improves.
Executive Function and Autism
Many autistic children show significant executive function differences, particularly in cognitive flexibility and self-monitoring. Difficulty shifting away from a preferred activity, rigid adherence to routines, and challenges with open-ended tasks (like creative writing or group projects) often reflect executive function profiles rather than willful non-compliance.
Classroom Accommodations That Actually Help
The most effective accommodations address the specific profile of the child — not just the diagnostic label. Many of the accommodations below are designed explicitly to compensate for executive function deficits.
For ADHD
- Preferential seating near the teacher and away from high-traffic areas or windows — reduces the inhibitory control demands of filtering distractions
- Frequent, brief check-ins from the teacher rather than waiting until the end of class — compensates for self-monitoring deficits
- Extended time on tests and assignments (typically 1.5x or 2x) — accounts for processing speed and task initiation delays
- Chunked assignments with intermediate checkpoints — breaks planning demands into manageable steps
- Movement breaks — structured opportunities to stand, stretch, or briefly leave the desk — regulates arousal and improves subsequent attention
- Fidget tools (stress balls, textured seat cushions) that don't distract others
- Visual schedules and timers displayed prominently — externalizes time management so the child doesn't have to rely on internal time perception
- Separate testing environment to reduce distraction during high-stakes assessments
- Advance notice of transitions — a verbal or visual cue 5 minutes before an activity ends — supports cognitive flexibility and reduces transition resistance
- Written or visual task checklists — offloads working memory demands so the child can focus on execution rather than remembering what comes next
- Homework planner review at the end of each class — a teacher or aide confirms assignments are recorded correctly before the child leaves
For Learning Disabilities
- Text-to-speech software (e.g., Read&Write, NaturalReader) for students with dyslexia — reduces decoding load so working memory can focus on comprehension
- Speech-to-text tools for students whose writing difficulties outpace their ideas
- Graphic organizers before writing assignments — externalizes the planning and organization demands of composition
- Chunked reading assignments with comprehension checks between sections
- Oral response options as an alternative to written tests when appropriate
- Highlighted or annotated texts that pre-identify key information — reduces working memory load during reading
- Reduced copying from the board — printed notes or digital access to teacher slides
- Spell-check and grammar tools permitted during writing tasks
- Manipulatives in math for students with dyscalculia who need concrete representations
For Autism Spectrum Disorder
- Predictable daily schedule posted visually, with advance notice of any changes — directly supports cognitive flexibility by reducing the surprise element of transitions
- Quiet workspace option for sensory-sensitive students during independent work
- Sensory accommodations — noise-canceling headphones, dimmed lighting, seating away from fluorescent flicker
- Clear, literal instructions — avoiding idioms or ambiguous language without explanation
- Social scripts or visual supports for navigating transitions, group work, or unstructured time — compensates for self-monitoring and social planning deficits
- Designated safe space the student can access when overwhelmed — supports emotional regulation
- Reduced group work requirements or structured roles within group tasks
- Written instructions in addition to verbal ones — reduces working memory demands
- Advance preparation for changes — field trips, substitute teachers, fire drills — with social stories or visual previews when possible
- First-then boards ("First finish the worksheet, then you can read your book") — makes task sequencing concrete and predictable
Home-Based Strategies to Reinforce School Support
Accommodations don't stop at the school door. The home environment plays a significant role in whether a child can consolidate what they've learned and approach the next school day with some degree of readiness. Many of the most effective home strategies are, at their core, executive function scaffolds.
Creating Structure at Home
- Consistent after-school routine: snack → downtime → homework → dinner, in the same order each day. Predictability reduces the planning and initiation demands that drain children with ADHD and ASD.
- Homework in the same place: a designated, low-distraction workspace. For children with ADHD, this often means away from siblings, screens, and high-traffic areas — reducing the inhibitory control demands of filtering distractions.
- Visual schedule on the wall: a simple chart showing the after-school sequence. Children who struggle with time perception and working memory benefit from seeing the plan rather than having to hold it in mind.
- Visual timer use: a Time Timer or similar tool makes abstract time concrete. "You have 20 minutes for this section" lands differently when the child can see the time shrinking — it externalizes the time management skill that is internally unreliable.
Homework Strategies
- Break it into chunks: 15–20 minute work blocks with a 5-minute break in between are more productive than a 90-minute slog for most children with ADHD or LD. This works with — rather than against — the executive function profile.
- Start with the hardest subject: cognitive resources, including working memory and inhibitory control, are highest at the beginning of the session. Save easier tasks for when fatigue sets in.
- Read instructions aloud together: many children with LD or ADHD misread or skip instructions entirely — a working memory and self-monitoring failure. A brief read-through together prevents the frustration of completing the wrong task.
- Use a written checklist for homework tasks: checking off completed items offloads working memory and gives the child a concrete sense of progress — both of which support task persistence.
- Use the same tools at home as at school: if your child uses text-to-speech at school, have it available at home. Consistency reduces the cognitive load of switching systems.
- Celebrate completion, not perfection: the goal of homework is practice, not mastery. Praise effort and follow-through — especially task initiation, which is often the hardest step.
Communication with the School
- Request a brief weekly check-in with the teacher — even a 5-minute email update — so you're not waiting for report cards to learn how things are going.
- Keep a communication log: note what accommodations are being used, what's working, and what isn't. This documentation is valuable at IEP or 504 meetings.
- Attend meetings prepared: bring your own notes, questions, and any recent evaluations. You are a full member of the team, not a passive recipient of information.
- Know your rights: in New York, parents have the right to request an IEP meeting at any time, not just at the annual review. If something isn't working, you don't have to wait.
When to Consider a New or Updated Evaluation
Accommodations are only as good as the evaluation that informs them. If your child's current plan was developed more than three years ago, or if their needs have changed significantly, an updated psychoeducational evaluation may be warranted.
A comprehensive evaluation can:
- Clarify whether a diagnosis has changed or evolved (this is common as children develop)
- Identify co-occurring conditions that may not have been recognized initially — ADHD and anxiety, for example, frequently co-occur, as do ADHD and learning disabilities
- Assess executive function directly, providing a detailed profile of which specific skills are most impaired and which are relative strengths
- Provide updated cognitive and academic data that strengthens IEP or 504 requests
- Give you and the school a clearer picture of your child's specific learning profile — not just their diagnosis, but the underlying cognitive architecture that drives their challenges
